Under Trump's administration, the US has removed student visas of hundreds of international students, among which Indian nationals account for nearly 50% of those affected. According to the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), 372 students primarily from India, China, South Korea, Nepal and Bangladesh have been impacted through Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) terminations in the US.
This decision, as confirmed through reports from students, universities and legal representatives, has raised concerns over the opaque manner in which these revocations were carried out. Many affected students reported little to no communication or clear recourse to challenge the action, leading to widespread confusion and anxiety.
How Student Visa Revocation in the US Are Affecting Education & Economy?
For Indian students who form one of the largest international cohorts in the US, the situation has been particularly distressing. Students had invested years of effort, significant finances and emotional commitment towards their education and career aspirations in the United States and this sudden revocation has disrupted not only their academic progress, but also potential career pathways under programs like OPT and CPT.
While officials have cited visa fraud and national security concerns as reasons, many believe these measures are overly broad and not reflective of individual cases. Institutions too are feeling the impact, as international students contribute billions annually to the US economy and also bring critical talent to graduate level programs like STEM courses in the USA
The Shifting Focus to Friendlier Study Abroad Destinations
This policy shift has triggered students to explore alternatives like Canada, Australia or Germany as these countries are known for their stable and transparent visa policies and welcoming stance towards international talent.
