Australia continues to strengthen its position as a top destination for international students, with 9 of its universities ranked among the world's top 100 and 95% of its institutions recognised globally according to the QS World University rankings.
To study in Australia, international students must apply for the Subclass 500 Student Visa, which allows them to pursue education in an Australian institution of their choice for up to 5 years. Before applying for this visa students must enrol in a course and obtain a Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE) from a registered Australian education provider. Australian student visa holders are also allowed to travel in and out of Australia freely and bring family members such as partners or children.
As of July 1, 2025, the base fees for the Australian student visa have increased from AUD 1,600 to AUD 2,000. Additional applicant charges applicable include AUD 1,225 for those aged above 18 years and AUD 400 for minors. If the application is submitted from within Australia, a Subsequent Temporary Application Charge (STAC) of 700 may also be applicable.

A key benefit of the student visa for Australia is the right to work. Students enrolled in coursework programs can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, while their course is in session, including during exams and pre-course periods. However, during scheduled course breaks, students are allowed to work unlimited hours.
There is also no work restriction for students enrolled in a master's by research or doctrine programs, and they can work unlimited hours at any time, once their course begins. However, it is crucial for visa holders to adhere to all conditions and restrictions of the visa to avoid cancellation.
