The Australian Government's 2025 - 26 Federal Budget delivered on March 25, 2025, marks a period of stability in immigration policy ahead of the anticipated federal elections by May.

Gradual Adjustment in Australia Migration Levels
The government has confirmed a phased reduction in net overseas migrations over the next 4 years to stabilize post pandemic population growth. Net migration is forecast to reduce to 260,000 in 2024 - 25, from previously 582,000 in 2022 - 23. A remarkable social initiative is the new Leaving Violence Program commencing July 1, 2025 This initiative will offer migrant women affected by intimate partner violence access to up to $5,000 in index financial support along with safety planning, risk assessment and referral services for 12 weeks regardless of visa status.
The program has been built and implemented based on successful previous pilots and aims to remove financial barriers to leaving abusive relationships.
Focus on Skilled Migration and Employer Compliance
From 1 July 2025, the Core Skills Income threshold for the Subclass 482 visa will increase to $76,515 from $73,150 with the Specialist Skills Income threshold rising to $141,210 from $135,000.
Employers lodging nominations before this date should act swiftly, especially if the offered salary is below the new threshold as labor market testing and a 28 day advertising window may apply.
Additionally the Superannuation Guarantee rate will increase to 12% from 11.5% previously affecting Subclass 482 visa holders. Employers are advised to review remuneration structures to ensure compliance without breaching sponsorship obligations.

Enhanced Immigration Detention and Resettlement Services
A new contract with Secured Journeys Pty Ltd will complement existing services by Serco, ensuring continued support and management of immigration detention. The government has also committed funding for resettlement in Nauru for individuals released from Australia's detention who cannot remain in the country.
