Australia’s skilled visa program has undergone a significant enhancement starting December 7, 2024, with the introduction of the new Skills In Demand (SID) visa and the modernized occupation list called the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).
The Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) visa has replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa, offering enhanced, streamlined, and efficient processes for both skilled migrants and businesses. The new visa allows holders to stay in Australia for up to 4 years. This approach provides both migrants and enterprises access to the talent needed to thrive and expand.
Not just it, the new Skills in Demand visa also provides a clear pathway to permanent residency in Australia, providing certainty to both migrants and employers.
Key Features of the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa Australia
A brief overview of the key features of the new Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) visa are as follows:
1. Offers 3 Streams to Meet the Workforce Needs
Stream Name | Details |
---|---|
Core Skills Stream | Designed for SID visa holders to address workforce shortage needs in key sectors |
Specialist Skills Stream | Focusses on driving innovation and job creation by attracting highly skilled professionals. |
Labour Agreement Stream | This will transition into the Essential Skills Stream which is currently under development. |
2. Pathway to Permanent Residency
Every year you work with an approved employer adds count to your Australia PR eligibility.
3. Simplified Work Experience Requirements
Applicants would only need 1 year of work experience in their nominated field, compared to previously 2 years requirements for the TSS visa.
4. Consistent English Language Requirements
The English language proficiency requirements remain the same as for the TSS medium term stream.
5. Modernised Occupation List
The Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) has replaced the previous occupation lists Australia. The list includes 450+ in demand jobs in areas like construction, healthcare, agriculture, cybersecurity, etc.
Transition Guidelines for the New SID Visa
The applications lodged before December 7, 2024 would be processed under the existing or old visa rules. However if your employer has lodged a TSS nomination but you are yet to apply for the visa, then your nomination would automatically switch to an SID nomination, allowing you to apply under the new SID visa.
Earning Potential for Applicants Under the SID Visa Streams
The earning potential under the different streams of the new Subclass 482 SID visa is as follows:
- Core Skills Stream: This stream is specifically designed for roles as mentioned in the CSOL, offering a fair pay with minimum salary of AUD 73,150.
- Specialist Skills Stream: This stream is for highly skilled professionals earning at least AUD 135,000 in eligible roles. (however note that some exceptions might apply)
