Canada IRCC has updated the average processing times for certain immigration and citizenship services as of September 2025.
These changes showcase a huge spectrum of immigration routes. The recent figures from IRCC show an anticipated duration for processes ranging from short-term visitor entries to long-term permanent residence (PR) approvals, citizenship, and document renewals like passports.
These figures serve as important benchmarks for applicants and their families, but are subject to change due to seasonal volume, document accuracy, or added background checks.
Citizenship Processing
- Grant of Citizenship: Currently averages 11 months, up by 1 month since August 2025.
- Citizenship Certificate (Proof): Stable at 5 months.
- Renunciation of Citizenship: Has increased sharply to 10 months, now 5 months slower than before.
- Search of Citizenship Records: Slightly faster, now at 13 months.

Permanent Resident Card Timelines
- New PR Card: Processed in 36 days on average, unchanged.
- Renewal of PR Card: Averaging 33 days, a slight increase of 1 day.
Note: Applicants are advised to submit complete packages to avoid any further delays, particularly with the ongoing operational changes.
Family Sponsorship Applications
- Spouse/Common-law Partner (Outside Canada - Non-Quebec): 15 months processing; increased by 2 months.
- Spouse/Common-law Partner (Quebec): Exceptionally longer, 41 months, unchanged from last month.
- Spouse/Common-law Partner (Inside Canada - Non-Quebec): Now at 23 months, significantly reduced by 13 months.
- Parents/Grandparents Sponsorship (Non-Quebec): 26 months, 10 months faster than the previous update.
- Parents/Grandparents Sponsorship (Quebec): 44 months, 4 months faster.

Passport Issuance
- In-person: 10 business days
- Mail: 20 business days
- Urgent/Express Pickup: From next business day up to 9 business days
Permanent Residency (Economic Programs)
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC): 5 months; stable.
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): 6 months; reduced by 1 month.
- Express Entry PNP: 8 months
- Non-Express Entry PNP: 19 months, 1 month faster.
- Quebec Skilled Worker (QSW): 11 months, up 2 months.
- Start Up Visa- 53 months, an increase.
Temporary Resident and Study Permit Timelines
- Visitor Visa (from India): 63 days; up to 9 days.
- Visitor Visa Inside Canada: 13 days
- Visitor Extension (Inside Canada): 170 days; reduced.
- Super Visa (India): 139 days
- Study Permit (India): 4 weeks, up by 1 week.
- Study Permit Extension: 163 days
- Work Permit (India): 8 weeks
Observations and Tips Before You Apply
- The program durations of Quebec are among the longest, so applicants have the leverage to get built in the buffer time and consult provincial requirements frequently.
- Economic immigration, such as Express Entry, CEC, and FSWP, will continue to offer the most efficient routes for skilled candidates.
- With more than 901,700 applications pending as of August 2025, processing benchmarks remain highly variable. It is advised to proactively track and complete applications.
- IRCC’s updated models now reflect 80% of processed applications for improved accuracy, although results depend on applicant circumstances and submission quality.
