The UK government is now modernizing the immigration system by introducing eVisas (electronic visas) for international students and skilled workers. Those falling under these categories will no longer receive a vignette when applying for a work or study visa.
An eVisa is a more secure, digital way to record a person’s immigration status when compared to a physical visa sticker in a passport or a BRP card. This digitalised move will replace the antiquated physical biometric residence permit (BRP) with a fully digital system, changing how non-UK residents prove their immigration status in the country.
This system is already being used for certain visa categories, but starting in 2025, it will become compulsory for all international students and workers entering or living in the UK. The big advantage of introducing this new visa is that it allows applicants to submit biometrics and collect their passport on the same day, eliminating the need to return to the Visa Application Centre.

Affected Visas After the Introduction of eVisa in UK
This mandatory e-visa implication in the UK is going to affect some already existing visas, which are:
- Study Visas (including Tier 4 visas for university students)
- Work Visas (including skilled worker and healthcare worker categories)
- Family or dependent visas
Note: International students planning to study at a UK university in 2025 or later will no longer receive a BRP card. Instead, your eVisa will serve as your official proof of right to live, study, and work (if eligible) in the country.
What to Do After Your UK eVisa is Granted?
Under the new system, visa holders will log in to their UKVI account to view and share their immigration status with employers, universities, landlords, and other organizations that need to verify it.
Once you have received your UK e-visa, follow the following steps:
- Create a UKVI account by using your passport number, date of birth, and other identification details.
- Log in to view your visa details and status online.
- Generate a share code when someone (like a landlord or employer) needs to verify your immigration status.
- Keep your passport information updated, especially if you get a new passport during your stay.

The UK's decision towards opting for e-visas is an attempt to go paperless and start a streamlined immigration process. While it may take time for people to adjust to this digital-first model, the long-term benefits of convenience, security, and speed are undeniable.
