Australia has announced a 9% increase in its international student intake, raising the cap to 295,000 for 2026. This marks a shift towards growth after recent restrictions aimed at curbing excessive migration. This decision is part of a broader effort to balance economic benefits with infrastructure and housing capacity.
Australia Sets New Student Cap Amid Push for Balanced Growth
In a statement released Monday, the government confirmed the cap on foreign student arrivals will rise by 25,000 next year. The current cap of 270,000, introduced for 2025 to counter rapid migration growth, had sparked debate over housing shortages and rising living costs. Officials now suggest those measures have begun to take effect, allowing room for a controlled increase.
Education Minister Jason Clare emphasized the need for growth that aligns with student welfare and national priorities. Under the new policy, public universities will need to ensure that both domestic and international students have access to secure housing. Additionally, institutions will be encouraged to focus on attracting students from Southeast Asian nations.
Of the 295,000 slots, approximately two-thirds will be allocated to universities and the rest to vocational education providers. Assistant Minister for Education Julian Hill reiterated that last year’s visa reforms were essential to stabilizing the system. These included stricter rules and a significant hike in student visa fees, which more than doubled in 2024, reducing opportunities for long-term stays via extensions.
Universities Australia has backed the increase, calling it a practical step for a sector crucial to the economy. With international education contributing over AUD 51 billion in 2024, the government aims to maintain this momentum while avoiding over-reliance on specific markets like China. This strategic shift also positions Australia competitively as global peers like the UK, US, and Canada impose tighter restrictions on international student admission.
