Australia has introduced revised visa regulations specifically for Indian graduates enrolled in tertiary institutions within the country. Under these updated rules which have come effective from July 1, 2023, Indian students are now eligible to apply for employment without a visa for a period of up to eight years. These modifications have been implemented in accordance with the bilateral agreement inked between India and Australia in May 2023.
Under the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES) established as part of a bilateral agreement, Indian students now have the opportunity to work in Australia for up to eight years without a visa requirement. This program allows 3000 young professionals from India to annually avail themselves of this option.
Additionally, Indian students will also have the privilege of spending two years in Australia without the need for a visa sponsor. The MATES program, which falls under the category of a temporary visa initiative, caters to Indian graduate professionals from various fields including engineering, information and communication technology, mining, financial technology, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy.
“Australia has raised the maximum work hours for international students to 48 hours per fortnight, enabling them to pursue additional employment while studying.”
Starting from July 1, the updated visa rules allow international students to work for a maximum of 48 hours per fortnight in Australia. However, individuals working in the aged care sector are exempt from this restriction and can work unlimited hours until December 31, 2023.
To be eligible for the benefits offered by the MATES visa program, candidates must be below 31 years of age and have completed their education from a recognized and verified university.
