On September 26, Newfoundland and Labrador invited a total of 217 candidates to apply for provincial immigration. These invitations are being distributed by two main programs: the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP) and the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP).
Overview of Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP)
The AIP is an employer-supported route for permanent residence in Atlantic Canada’s provinces. To be eligible for AIP, the candidate requires a job offer from a designated employer in Atlantic Canada, along with some work experience or education criteria. Candidates can secure a special work permit for up to two years while their permanent residence application is processed.
Overview of the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP)
NLPNP allows the province to nominate skilled workers, graduates, and entrepreneurs for permanent residence. It includes five streams: Skilled Worker (Express Entry), Skilled Worker, International Graduate, International Entrepreneur, and International Graduate Entrepreneur. Successful nominees apply to the federal government for permanent residence after receiving a provincial nomination.

Newfoundland and Labrador switched to an Expression of Interest (EOI) system for both the NLPNP and Atlantic Immigration Program earlier this year. The province has consistently held immigration draws. Notably, the last two draws have seen a rise in the number of invitations issued under the AIP. In fact, this recent draw marks the first time that the number of invitations sent to AIP candidates has exceeded those sent to NLPNP candidates, reflecting a shift in the province's immigration focus.
