Starting from February 18, 2026, applicants applying under the Express Entry category will need to meet the updated work experience requirements of at least 12 months within the past three years. Check out what has changed & what not for upcoming draws
Express Entry candidates are now required to have at least 12 months of work experience within the past three years to be eligible for an occupation category. However, there is a provision that this work experience need not be continuous
Before the implementation of this change, to qualify for an Express Entry occupational category required just six months of continuous work experience within the past three years. Starting from February 18, 2026, all the Express Entry occupational categories would adhere to the updated eligibility requirements for the category-based selection draws.
What Remains Unchanged in Work Experience Requirements?
- The work experience can be obtained within the last three years.
- Work experience should be in one eligible occupation.
- Full-time work experience is defined as at least 30 hours per week.
- Part-time work can also qualify if it equals full-time working hours, which is equal to 15 hours per week for 24 months
- Working more than 30 hours per week does not provide extra credits.
- Work experience may be gained in Canada or abroad, unless a category specifically requires Canadian experience
- For Canadian work experience, time worked while enrolled as a full-time student, including co op terms, does not count.
