Canada Adapts IELTS Requirements: Emphasis Shifts from Individual Section Scores

Canada has revised its IELTS requirements for international students applying through the Study Direct Stream (SDS) program with the aim to prioritize overall skills to increase opportunities for international students.

As of August 10, a noteworthy alteration has been introduced for applicants applying through the Study Direct Stream (SDS) program. Notably, the previous stipulation mandating a minimum score of 6 bands in individual sections of the IELTS exam has been eliminated.

Under the newly outlined guidelines, prospective students will now only be obligated to achieve an overall band score of 6.0 to be eligible for the SDS program in Canada. This pivotal shift effectively eradicates the compulsory criterion of securing a 6.0 band score in each section of the test, marking a notable departure from the previous framework.
