Austria has begun actively collaborating with and attracting Indian students to its technical universities through new initiatives focused on engineering and STEM fields, offering moderate fees, safe cities, and significant opportunities for international exposure and career growth.
A partnership has been established between Austria’s top technical universities including TU Wien, TU Graz, and TU Leoben and VFS Education Services, with a priority of student mobility for Indian engineering graduates. The collaboration invites students from Indian colleges recognised by the ANABIN database and provides routes for those to pursue two-year Master’s degrees that combine academic rigour and industry experience.
Tuition Fees, Courses, Seats, and Admission
With the intention of keeping the affordability intact, tuition fees are set at €726.72 per semester, plus a student union fee of €25. The universities in Austria are offering Master’s programmes in biotechnology, metallurgy, AI and robotics, circular engineering, sustainable technologies, environmental sciences, petroleum engineering, industrial data science, and software engineering, among others. More than 300 Master’s seats are available for the 2026 intake: TU Wien offers 50, TU Graz 175, TU Leoben 84; plus about 15 Bachelor’s seats at TU Leoben.
TU Loben features specialised Bachelor’s programs including Geo-energy Engineering and Responsible Consumption & Production (EURECA-PRO).
Please note that English is going to be the medium of instruction in three-quarters of academic programmes, so incoming students do not require German at entry, but learning it later is beneficial for integration and career advancement.

Eligibility and Application Steps
Applicants must have at least a BE/BTech/BSc (Hons) degree (GPA of 2.5 on the Austrian scale, about 65–70% in Indian marks) and proficiency in English. Applications are accepted through the VFS portal or by email, and selection is based on grades, interviews, language proficiency, and document checks.
Note: Intakes for Summer and Winter 2026 have begun.
What are Working Rights and Post-Study Opportunities?
International students are allowed to work 20 hours per week along with their studies, with part-time roles available within universities. Graduates receive a one-year post-study visa to seek jobs, with pathways to Austria’s Red-White-Red Card (residency) and the EU Blue Card for pan-European work.
Austria Focuses on Student Safety and Integration
Austria is known as one of Europe’s safest countries with low crime rates and proactive measures for student integration. Dedicated local police contacts ensure foreign students have support and guidance, contributing to an inviting, safe, and secure environment even in smaller university towns.

What Does the Future of This Collaboration Hold?
Austrian universities are not focusing on independent Indian campuses but seek to expand partnerships and joint programmes with leading Indian institutions to reflect academic and industrial collaboration. Austria encourages Indian students to experience its culture, educational environment, and innovative ecosystem first-hand, rather than replicating it elsewhere.
After facing a STEM skill shortage in Austria, it has turned to India’s talent pool to grow its innovation, address industry needs, and keep classrooms globally diverse. The collaboration builds direct links in programs, industry integration, and mobility without setting up separate Austrian campuses in India.
