SEVIS is the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, a database that keeps track of non-national students and exchange visitors in the U.S. In 2004, Congress introduced the I-901 SEVIS Fee, which is required for all nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors.
It's important to note that the SEVIS fee is distinct from visa fees and any SEVIS administration fees charged by schools. So, what exactly is the SEVIS fee, and who is required to pay it? Let's explore the details.
How does SEVIS Work?
When a university accepts your application and offers you admission, it also notifies the DHS (Department of Homeland security) of your SEVIS information, then you get your SEVIS number from your university. This number will reflect on your I-20 form.
Who Needs to Pay the SEVIS Fee
You should pay the SEVIS fee if you wish to visit the US because of certain reasons, such as:
- When you are applying to modify your non-immigrant status to F-1 while residing in the US.
- When you have applied for reinstatement despite being ineligible for more than five months while inside the country.
- When you are requesting a visa as a new student commencing an IUPUI programme with an I-20.
- When you are visiting the US in F-1 status as a Canadian citizen.
