Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has enhanced its online processing time tool to provide applicants for permanent residence (PR) and citizenship with a clearer understanding of when they can expect a decision.
What’s New in the IRCC Tool?
The updated tool now asks two simple questions to generate personalized results:
- “Have you already applied?”
- “When did you apply?”
If you’ve already submitted your application, the tool will now display:
- The estimated time left before a decision is made.
- The number of people ahead of you in the queue.
- The total number of people waiting for a decision.
It also compares your processing time with that of people applying:
For instance, a fictional applicant named Sally applied to the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) in May 2025. When checking her status in October 2025, the system shows she has about 26 months left to wait, with around 9,500 people ahead of her. Meanwhile, someone applying today through AIP would face a total processing time of about 37 months.
If you haven’t applied yet, the tool will instead display the current overall processing time and the total number of applications waiting in line. In a related example, Sally’s friend Rachel, who hasn’t applied yet, learns that the AIP currently takes around 37 months, with 13,100 people waiting for a decision.
