As per the recent statement by the Federal Foreign Office, Germany has issued 80,000 work visas in the first 6 months of 2024 i.e. January to June 2024. Out of the total issued visas, about 40,000 were granted to skilled workers, signifying an increase of 3,000 visas as compared to the same period (Jan to June) in 2023.
This increase in visa issuance is largely interlinked with the German nation’s labor shortage (specifically for skilled workers). As stated by the 2023 EURES report Germany is currently facing an extreme shortage of skilled workers in more than 70 occupations, with roles distributed into various sectors like transport, healthcare, construction, engineering, IT, etc.
Germany Job Vacancies: Quick Overview
As reported by DW, the German Economic Institute (IW) anticipates that the lost production potential is to rise to EUR 74 billion by 2027.
- In the year 2023, nearly 600,000 job vacancies in Germany remained unfilled, resulting in a negative effect on the country’s economy which is estimated to further increase in the coming years.
- Adding to the study by the Institute for Employment Research, the German Labour Minister Hubertus Heil clearly states that the country might witness a shortage of about 7 million employees by 2035.
Germany Changing Immigration Rules to Attract Foreign Workers
Recently the German nation expressed its keen interest in Indian skilled workers, to meet their labor shortage. In regard to this initiative, the German authorities have planned to propose the Indian Skilled Worker Strategy to German-Indian government consultations this autumn.
In addition to the above-mentioned initiative, Germany has also eased some of its immigration rules for foreign workers to significantly meet the rising labor shortage.
In June 2024, Germany doubled (2X) the annual number of work visas granted to 50,000 under the Western Balkans Regulation. As a result of this increase foreigners from many countries like Albania, Kosovo, Bosnia, etc, now enjoy more opportunities in the German labor market.
June 2024, is also the very month when the Germany Opportunity Card was introduced for easier immigration access for non-EU citizens to Germany, to better facilitate their job search in the German nation.
