Canada Spousal Open Work Permit: Complete List of Eligible Jobs

Canada has updated its Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) eligibility, affecting spouses of foreign workers. The latest policy limits SOWP access to those whose partners work in TEER 0, TEER 1, or select TEER 2 and TEER 3 jobs. List of Eligible TEER 2 and TEER 3 Occupations for SOWPs

To qualify for a Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) under the new rules, the foreign worker must be employed in one of the following:

• A TEER 0 occupation
• A TEER 1 occupation
• A limited number of TEER 2 and TEER 3 occupations

Additionally, the foreign workers must have at least 16 months remaining on their work permit at the time of the spouse’s SOWP application.

These new eligibility requirements took effect on January 21 and do not impact previously approved work permits or their renewals. Before this update, spouses of foreign workers could apply for SOWPs regardless of their partner’s occupation. This change significantly narrows the list of eligible applicants, making it crucial to check whether a TEER 2 or TEER 3 occupation qualifies under the updated policy.
