#ImmigrationMatters Campaign by IRCC
Welcoming Week is one of the facets of IRCC #ImmigrationMatters campaign, is an initiative specifically designed to promote awareness of the advantages of immigration in Canada. This campaign urges active participation and offers several recommendations on how Canadians could contribute.
IRCC states that one distinctive method to engage in Welcoming Week is by reaching out to organizations that provide settlement services and being paired with a newcomer. From there, we can assist the new immigrants in adapting to their new community's daily life.
Additionally, it serves as a form of encouragement for both Canadians and new immigrants to share meals or attend cultural events together. Establishing a connection with a newcomer can also be as straightforward as engaging in conversation to help them enhance their English or French language skills.
Canada Believes “Sense of Belongingness is the Crucial Driver to Immigrants Willingness to Integrate and Settle”
A recent study by Statistics Canada reveals that immigrants tend to experience a greater sense of belonging in Canada compared to individuals who are native-born Canadians. This is particularly prevalent among Ontario and the Atlantic Provinces (including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador).
The study attributes this sense of belonging among newcomers to their positive perceptions of Canada's multicultural policies, their appreciation of Canada's distinctive Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and their belief in the importance of Canada's national symbols as integral components of Canadian identity.
A heightened sense of belonging among newcomers translates to increased community engagement, more extensive social connections, and a greater likelihood of deciding to remain in Canada and contribute to its economy.
Why is Canada Investing Efforts in Immigration and Immigrants?
Immigration drives Canada's growth, contributing almost entirely to its labor force expansion and three-quarters of its population increase. Skilled workers make up a significant portion of newcomers.
Canada's economic strength is closely linked to immigration, with businesses owned by immigrants making up 24.4% of private sector enterprises in the third quarter of 2022.
In 2022, Canada welcomed 437,000 immigrants, and it plans to admit 465,000 by the end of 2023, with a goal of over 500,000 new permanent residents each year by 2025 as per the Canada immigration levels plan 2023-25.
