Trump Defends H-1B Visa, Call it Necessary to Fill US Talent Gaps

During an interview on November 12, US President Donald Trump talked about the necessity of the H-1B visa to bring in specific talent that the United States lacked. Trump suggested that while America prioritises jobs for domestic workers, there are certain roles in sectors like defence and manufacturing that require skills not easily found within the existing US workforce.
Further, he explained that complex jobs, such as those involving missile production, cannot be assigned to individuals without the required training and expertise. Thus, importing skilled workers through H-1B visas remains essential.
When Ingraham suggested the US had plenty of talent, Trump firmly disagreed, stating, “No, you don't. You don't have certain talents,” and pointed out that training people off an unemployment line for highly specialised roles is impractical.

The remark made by Trump signals a rare defence of the H-1B visa programme, which mainly benefits foreign professionals, including a significant number of Indian engineers. This came shortly after his administration imposed a controversial $100,000 fee for employers applying for new H-1B visas, a move seen as part of a broader immigration crackdown. Despite this, Trump acknowledged the continued demand for global talent, highlighting instances like an Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid that targeted illegal immigrants at a Hyundai battery manufacturing facility staffed largely by skilled foreign workers who contributed specialised knowledge crucial for battery production.
The comments show a nuanced stance: although the Trump administration had tightened H-1B visa regulations to prioritise American workers, it also recognises the practical need to bring in foreign experts for highly technical and sensitive jobs that cannot be filled domestically without extensive training.
