Canada has introduced revised income requirements for those wishing to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency in 2025. These changes impact citizens and permanent residents applying under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), emphasizing financial readiness for family reunification.
To sponsor under the PGP, applicants must show a minimum income of CAD 47,549 for the year 2024. This marks a rise of CAD 3,000 compared to the previous requirement. These updates aim to ensure sponsors can support their family members without strain on public services.
Updated Income Requirements to Sponsor Parents and Grandparents Under PGP in 2025
If you are planning to sponsor your parents and grandparents under the Canada PGP program in 2025, you must meet the income requirements for the last three years: 2022, 2023, and 2024. These income levels vary based on the total number of family members, including the sponsored relatives. Sponsors can count both their income and that of a co-signer, such as a spouse or common-law partner.

How to Calculate Family Size for PGP Sponsorship?
When applying to sponsor your parents or grandparents under PGP, it is important to accurately calculate your family size. This number determines the income you must show to qualify, and it includes more than just those immigrating. You will need to count every individual you are financially responsible for, past and present.
Who to Include in Your Family Size:
- Yourself
- Your Spouse or Common-law partner (even if separated in most cases)
- Dependent children, including those of your partner and their children
- Individuals you or your co-signer previously sponsored, along with their family members
- The relatives you wish to sponsor - including their spouse or partner, and dependent children
- Sponsored person's family members, even if they are already in Canada or not immigrating.
