Why has Canada Appointed a New Immigration Minister?
As per CBC's report, Prime Minister Trudeau is reorganizing the cabinet to accentuate the government's economic goals
Cabinet ministers in Canada are responsible for specific segments of the executive branch and offer advice to the head of government within their respective areas of purview.
In the case of the immigration minister, their role encompasses overseeing Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), which includes passport services, immigration processes, and temporary residence matters. The change in the immigration minister is part of a larger strategy to address pressing issues such as the housing crisis and align with the country's evolving policy goals.

Will this Change Impact Canadian Immigration?
Let’s take a look at the below pointers to see how the change in IRCC minister will impact the Canadian immigration
- In the immediate future, minimal changes are anticipated. For example, the newly introduced category-based Canada Express Entry draw will continue to be in effect.
- The target to welcome 1.45 million newcomers in the next three years remains intact as mandated by the Canadian government, overseen by the Liberal Party.
- Immigration policies are more likely to undergo significant shifts if a new political party wins an election. However, as Minister Miller is a member of the Liberal party, the current mandates are expected to be continued in the near future.
