Big Changes Canada Recently Announced for International Students

Here are a few of the latest updates unveiled by Canada, specifically for international students. These changes reshape the landscape of international education in Canada. The details we need to know are listed below

1. Student Cap and Provincial Attestation Letter

Starting from January 22, 2024, most new international college and undergraduate students need to include a provincial attestation letter (PAL) from a province or territory with their study permit application. The letter proves they have been allotted space within the national cap. Without it, applications will be rejected by IRCC, unless exempted.

2. PGWP Update for Master's Graduates

Recognizing the potential of master's degree graduates to excel in Canada's job market and apply for permanent residence, the duration of the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) has been extended. Starting February 15, graduates from master's programs lasting less than 2 years can now get a 3-year work permit if they meet the eligibility criteria.

3. Eligibility for Public-Private Partnership College Programs under PGWP

Concerns about the quality of education and support services for students in public-private partnership college programs have led to changes in PGWP eligibility. IRCC has made a rule to limit special work permits for people who study at these schools, as they think this will make fewer international students want to go to these schools.

4. Changes to Open Work Permit Eligibility for Spouses

Applicants for open work permits with spouses and common-law partners of international students will be eligible under the latest update. Spouses of students in graduate and professional degree programs will remain eligible for open work permits.
