Recently, Canada conducted its first express entry draw that is primarily focused on the education category. On May 1, 2025, Canada has planned 1,000 candidates to apply for permanent residency. This marks a positive expansion of the country’s immigration priorities, as the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues to adjust its immigration system to meet evolving labor market needs.
This recent draw-includes part of the Express Entry System, that focuses on managing skilled immigration applications which was first of its kind to focus on target professionals in the education and teaching sectors.
The new education category was first introduced in February 2025, aiming to attract experienced educators at a time when provinces across Canada are facing severe teacher shortages.
Reason of Express Entry Draw for Education Professionals
The public education system in Canada was facing an acute shortage in qualified teachers , early childhood educators, and education administrators. Provinces such as Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta have been quite serious about the need to bring international talent to educate the growing student population, especially in rural communities.
By drawing express entries for education professionals Canada is portraying itself as a global destination not just for students—but for those who teach them.
