In a significant development, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has resumed its Express Entry Draw, which took place on the 19th of September with 3,200 invitations issued to candidates across all programs.
To secure an Invitation to Apply (ITA), candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 531. This signifies an encouraging factor in Canada’s Express Entry system, a crucial pathway for skilled immigrants pursuing permanent residency in the country.
The reopening of draws is expected to provide a fresh opportunity for eligible candidates to pursue their immigration dreams and contribute to Canada's diverse and dynamic workforce. The immigration authority, IRCC, hasn't given a reason for this pause in draws. They confirmed on September 18 that they will start the draws again this week.
Express Entry Draw Insights: June 2023 and Beyond
This summer saw an increase in the number of Express Entry draws compared to previous years. This was because they introduced category-based selection rounds for sending invitations. Other insights of the Express Entry Draws of 2023 from June are listed below.

Express Entry Draw: Overview
Express Entry is a system that manages applications for three prominent economic immigration pathways in Canada: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class. Each program has specific eligibility criteria.
- A Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is used to assess and rank candidates based on factors like language proficiency, age, work experience, occupation, and education.
- The highest CRS scorers have a higher chance of receiving Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for Canadian permanent residency.
- Provincial nominees in the Express Entry pool gain an advantage with an additional 600 CRS points.
- Typical CRS score cutoffs in Express Entry draws range from 350-550, depending on the program or category.
Category-Based Selection: Overview
The new 6 categories were introduced on May 31 by the IRCC. The category-based selection system broadens the eligibility for Express Entry draws. The six new categories include strong French-speaking ability and work experience in sectors like
- Healthcare
- STEM professions
- Trades
- Transport
- Agriculture
- Agri-food.
The first category-based selection invitations were issued on June 28 for healthcare professionals. Subsequent draws targeted candidates in STEM professions, trades, and those proficient in French.
Eligible candidates must still be part of an Express Entry program and strive for a high CRS score as they compete with others. The new categories aim to address labor shortages in key sectors and boost the Canadian economy. The categories were chosen following consultations with provincial governments, business associations, and other stakeholders.
