Frequently Asked Questions

Which job board should we use if we’re applying to multiple countries?

Most of us start with LinkedIn because it works in almost every country. It’s useful, no doubt. But if we only stick to LinkedIn, we usually miss a lot of openings. Every country has its own popular job sites, and plenty of companies post only there. So if we’re looking at Germany and Canada, we can use LinkedIn for both, but it also makes sense to check Xing for Germany and Job Bank for Canada. It takes a bit more effort, but we end up seeing more real opportunities.

Do we really need to create profiles on all these platforms, or is one enough?

In practice, one is rarely enough. When we’re serious about finding a job, we usually end up using two or three platforms at the same time. Different companies post in different places. Bigger companies often use LinkedIn, while smaller or more local ones might only use regional job boards. Being on more than one platform just gives us better chances.

Are free job boards good enough, or should we pay for premium?

Most of the time, the free versions are good enough. We do not need to pay right away. Premium features can help a little, like showing who viewed our profile or giving more visibility, but they are not magic. It’s better to start with the free version and see how things go. If after a month or so nothing really moves, then we can think about upgrading.

How long does it usually take to find a job using these platforms?

There isn’t one clear answer. Some of us get interviews in a couple of weeks. Others need a few months. For many people, two to three months is pretty normal if we’re applying regularly and also doing some networking. For international jobs, it often takes a bit longer, maybe three to four months, because of visa steps and extra checks.

Should we apply through the company website or through job boards?

We should do both. If we find a job on LinkedIn or Indeed, we can apply there, but we should also check the company’s website and apply directly if the same role is listed. Some companies prefer direct applications, and some rely more on job boards. Doing both does not hurt and sometimes it really helps.
