Germany to Woo Indian Students to Overcome Labor Market Shortages

The German government is addressing labor shortages by attracting Indian students, the largest group of international students in the country, according to Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee of the German Academic Exchange Service.
A total of 43000 Indian students constitute the majority of foreign students studying in Germany. German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) president Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee stated during a press conference in New Delhi that it is critical to bring Indian students to the German labor market after graduation to tackle the growing shortage of skilled workers in the German labor market.
He added that Indian students will have an easier time joining the German employment market as a result of the conversations that took place between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023 and the recently approved Skilled Immigration Act in Germany. “For Indian students who got German degrees, many of which are taught in English, the way to employment in Germany and other Schengen area countries is now more attractive. We believe in the concept of brain circulation rather than brain drain, and we think that international students who are well qualified can follow a very successful professional career path in Germany,” Dr. Mukherjee said.
According to data from the German Federal Statistical Office, the number of Indian students studying in Germany increased by 26% from the previous year to 42,997 for the winter semester of 2022–2023. Indians make up the majority of the foreign enrollment at German universities, with engineering being the most popular subject with 60% of applicants, followed by mathematics and natural sciences.
The German government has recently permitted international students from outside the European Union to work up to 20 hours per week (an increase from the previous maximum of 10 hours), as the new Act went into effect on March 1, 2024. This regulation also extends to those taking German language instruction courses and students who go to Germany in pursuit of educational opportunities but have not yet joined a university.
